In 1997, Pawleys was recognized
as the National Association of Casual Furniture Manufacturer of the Year.
Pawleys Island was the first ever hammock manufacturing
company in the United States.
As it was in 1889, this hammock continues to be hand-woven
in the same tradition.
Every United States President since Truman has received
a Pawleys Island Hammock as a gift from South Carolina Senator Strom Thurman.
As an onlooker in our Pawleys Island weaving room, where
the hammock is knitted as it has been for almost a century, you will find
yourself keeping time to the rhythmic motion of the skilled native craftsman
as they work a needle of rope in and out of the hammock body, creating
symmetric patterns and lending a touch of art to the unique and interesting
craft.
As our craftsmen weave, you can often hear the enchanting
sounds of "gullah" conversation and song, which represents a
distinct southern lowcountry style of dialect and unique part of our American
Heritage.
